94 Points Wine Enthusiast, February 2024

Leads with pure cassis and black cherry aromas followed by notes of cedar, cigar box, and licorice. The expressive palate displays abundant red berry, bing cherry, and fresh plum flavors with a bright, ageworthy finish.

The inspiration for this blend comes from the Grand Cru wines of the Pauillac district of Bordeaux which are composed primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with accents from the other traditional Bordeaux red varieties. Our J. Lohr winemaking team is given the freedom to emulate these great wines without the restrictions of varietal percentages, instead keenly focusing on the texture and complexity of the blend that nature delivers with each vintage.

Vineyard & Vintage

Preseason rainfall in Paso Robles was higher than normal in 2019 with 13 inches falling from November to March and an additional inch falling after budbreak helped fill out the canopy prior to the onset of summer weather. We normally see slightly later budbreak in wet years, as was the case in 2019. This delays the phenological stages for the entire vintage, including bloom, veraison, and harvest. This worked to our advantage in 2019, allowing vines to ripen well into the last weeks of autumn. Cabernet Sauvignon for this blend was hand-picked on November 6th from the steep, chalky slopes of our J. Lohr Stairway Vineyard (formerly McCornack) in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles. 12% Cabernet Franc brings savory, peppery elements to the blend while small additions of Petit Verdot and Merlot add blue fruit and lively cherry accents.
