Pale yellow in color, the 2023 J. Lohr Gesture Viognier offers aromas of yellow flowers, peach, pineapple, and apricot. These aromas are complemented by the rich, balanced palate of lemon custard, ripe orange, vanilla, and a long, textured finish.

Vineyard

The grapes for the Gesture Viognier are grown on the J. Lohr Rain Catcher Vineyard in the Adelaida District of western Paso Robles. Planted in 2010, it is the westernmost winegrowing property in the Paso Robles AVA. It has a climate nearly identical to that of the northern Rhône; along with well-drained soils of calcareous shale and weathered sandstone, this vineyard’s terroir is a perfect match for growing Viognier. The warm days on this hillside vineyard help to naturally develop ripe, lush flavors, while the cool nights allow for hangtime, giving the wine power and depth.

Vintage

The spring of the 2023 in western Paso Robles was cool compared with recent vintages. Minimal irrigation was applied during most of that growing season until the heat of early September. There are many subtle differences in the two sites where Viognier is grown at Rain Catcher. Block 5 in the southern part of the ranch contributes citrus and strong floral notes from its heavier clay soils. Block 14 to the north provides fruit with aromas of linalool, lychee, and Asian spice from its gravelly, weathered sandstone. The harvest for this blend took place on October 10th from Block 14 and October 11th from Block 5.
