2018 J. Lohr Gean Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Pristine aromas of black currant, raspberry, and fresh-picked plum are accented by black peppercorn, nutmeg, and warm holiday spice notes. Fine, chewy tannins slowly immerge from the decadently supple palate, leaving a long finish of anise, cocoa dust, crème de cassis, and clove.

Vineyards

This Cabernet Sauvignon was grown at the J. Lohr Gean Vineyard, which is the westernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles AVA. Our planting, located in the Adelaida district, was established in 2009 and is bordered by dense oak forest to the east, with the Las Tablas Creek situated across the road to the west. The soils are a mix of calcareous shale and clay on steep slopes. Abounding with native flora and wildlife, this secluded and rugged vineyard is arduous to farm but well worth the effort.

Vintage

Thanks to a “Miracle March,” the 2018 Paso Robles growing season reached normal rainfall levels with over 70% of the season’s precipitation accumulated in just a 3-week period. This kicked off a vintage of exceptional quality and yield. A stretch of warm weather in May assured a good fruit set in the vineyard, followed by an unprecedented 46-day heat spell. This effectively delayed ripening as the vines shuttered their stomates to conserve moisture instead of opening up to photosynthesize. We hand-picked and berry-sorted Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gean Vineyard on October 27th. Our latest ripening vineyard each season, this ranch consistently produces Cabernet Sauvignon of phenomenal purity. The 2018 J. Lohr Gean Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was cellared for 18 months in French oak (15% new wood) to keep the lively and uniquely expressive fruit component front and center.
