2014 J. Lohr Gesture GSM
The third in a trio of strong vintages for Paso Robles, the wines of 2014 are showing dense and aromatically expressive, and are somewhat reminiscent of the early 2004 vintage. With less than half of the usual winter rainfall in the ground, spring growth rocketed as degree days racked up at a faster pace than we’ve seen in a decade. We welcomed the smaller canopy and sparser leaf cover that resulted in this energetic five-year-old Grenache planting. This late-ripening variety hung gracefully on the vine beyond the middle of October before the acidity softened and flavors began to pop.
The vineyard source for the Grenache and Mourvèdre in this blend is our Gean Ranch, which is the westernmost vineyard in the entire Paso Robles AVA. This planting, located in the Adelaida District, was established in 2009 and is just beginning to produce wines of the balance and intensity required for our Gesture program. Our farming plan brings the crop to one cluster per shoot prior to veraison, and in order to intensify flavor, these large-clustered
varieties require trimming off the wings and the lower third of the clusters as well. The Syrah component for this blend is grown in the Terra Bella Vineyard, also located within the Adelaida district at an elevation of 1,800 feet.

Intense strawberry and candied fruit aromas dominate, while integrated notes of fennel bulb and nutmeg are remnants of aging in classic French oak puncheons. Light and inviting on the palate, with a fresh berry sorbet finish.
