2012 J. Lohr Gesture GSM

2012 marked the return to more typical growing temperatures in Paso Robles after two of the coolest vintages in a decade. Rainfall was on the shy side at 7 inches for the winter, totaling less than 60% of normal. A nice wet storm arrived during budbreak on the first week of April, bringing welcome moisture for early season growth. Our typically warm springtime conditions delivered rapid shoot elongation which fully filled out the VSP canopy in this block. An unusual period of triple-digit hot temperatures added definition to the vintage in mid-August toward the end of veraison. We believe this gave a general uptrend of tannin structure for the vintage as a whole. Ideal warm and dry September weather accelerated ripening with this Grenache block, which was harvested on October 19th. The goal of the Gesture GSM blend is to highlight the uniquely bright fruit quality of Grenache and supporting it with structure and spice from Mourvèdre and Syrah components in the blend.

The vineyard source of Grenache and Mourvèdre in this blend is from a property once known as Gravity Hills. Located in the Willow Creek district in the western part of the Paso Robles appellation, these decade-old vines are planted on a steep, southwest-facing lime-shale hillside. The 23% slope in these blocks makes simply walking this vineyard very difficult. Our farming plan brings the crop to one cluster per shoot after bloom, and in order to intensify flavor, these large-clustered varieties require trimming off the wings and the lower third of the clusters shortly after set. The Syrah component for this blend comes from Terra Bella Vineyard, located within the warmer Adelaida district of the western Paso Robles appellation at an elevation of 1,800 feet.

The 2012 J. Lohr Gesture GSM is medium in color with a particularly bright hue. High-toned Grenache fruit is structured and spiced with a bit of Mourvèdre and a touch of soft Syrah. A year in French oak puncheons contributes aromas of baking spice and adds palate weight. The racy acidity of this wine will complement any Mediterranean menu.
