2012 marked the return to more typical growing temperatures in Paso Robles after two of the coolest vintages in a decade. Rainfall was on the shy side at 7 inches for the winter totaling less than 60% of normal. A nice wet storm arrived during budbreak on the first week of April that brought welcome moisture for growth. Our typically warm springtime conditions delivered rapid shoot growth which fully filled out the VSP canopy in this block. An unusual period of triple-digit hot temperatures added definition to the vintage in mid-August toward the end of veraison. We believe this gave a general uptrend of tannin structure for the vintage as a whole. Ideal warm and dry September weather pushed the fruit to full ripeness with this block picking on September 13th. The 2012 vintage of Gesture Syrah developed complex, spicy notes and soft tannins as it aged on its own yeast lees for 16 months in French oak barrels prior to bottling in March of 2014.

The grapes for this J. Lohr Gesture Syrah are grown at Terra Bella Vineyard, located within the Adelaida subdistrict of the Paso Robles AVA at an elevation of nearly 1,800 feet. The super steep south-facing Block 6 has lime-shale soils and is planted to Syrah clone 877. Thinned to just one cluster per shoot, this block is prone to rapid sugar accumulation and intense flavor concentration.

2012 Painter Bridge Chardonnay

Painter Bridge wines are available for International sales only.  For more information please contact us at

Chardonnay for Painter Bridge is grown in the cool and windy Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County, renowned for producing Chardonnays with powerful aromatics and remarkable texture. This Chardonnay is first fermented in older French oak barrels to enhance the pure fruit expression. After completion of alcoholic fermentation, the barrels are stirred, and the Chardonnay ages for 2 months with yeast lees. After barrel aging, the wine is transferred to a stainless steel tank and blended with a touch of Orange Muscat to enhance the bold fruitiness with an enticing floral character. The resulting wine is delightfully full-flavored with pretty, forward fruit aromas creating a pleasant, quaffable Chardonnay.

Delicious now, but can be cellared for up to five years.
