Arroyo Seco, Valdiguié
VINTAGE
In Monterey County’s beautiful Arroyo Seco region 2005 offered a season of natural abundance and ideal winegrowing conditions. Because Valdiguié is always the last variety to ripen in our vineyard, the weather at the end of the growing season is particularly essential for quality. With a lack of any significant heat spells late in the year, our Valdiguié enjoyed ample time to hang on the vine and ripen at its own languid pace. As a result, the grapes grown during this long, consistent season offered all the bright spicy fruit of great Valdiguié.
A number of techniques were used to accentuate the wonderful character of this lively varietal. From the use of carbonic maceration (or whole berry fermentation) to our emphasis on lengthy cold soaks and wild fermentation, our goal was to maintain the purity of the wine while adding complexity.
VALDIGUIÉ
Our 2005 Estates Valdiguié was grown on Chualar loam soil in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County. Originally thought to be the Gamay Noir grape of France’s Beaujolais winegrowing region, UC Davis has since identified this grape to be Valdiguié from an area in the southwest of France. Regardless of its origin and identity, Valdiguié grown in the windy, cold Arroyo Seco produces a wine reminiscent of the ‘Crus’ of Beaujolais’ – Morgon, Fleurie and Moulin-a-Vent.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS
Vibrant purple-red in color with youthful hues, our Wildflower Valdiguié displays intense varietal aromas of boysenberry, raspberry, blackberry and bing cherry preserves, with a touch of black pepper. The enticing bright berry character continues on the palate, which is well balanced with a lush, fruity finish. This wine is ideally consumed soon after harvest in the manner of a ‘nouveau’ wine--slightly chilled--and pairs wonderfully with picnic and garden-fresh fare, poultry or duck dishes, and sushi. Or, serve as an aperitif for casual drinking with friends.

2004 J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet -- VINTAGE
The 2004 vintage of our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon kicked off an unusually early harvest. Typically, we harvest around the end of September and run through middle to late October. In 2004, the fruit began rolling in on the 1st of September and was all but done by the end of the month. A warm, early spring and another year of below average rainfall brought bud break forward, ensuring an . . .
2005 Estates Riverstone Chardonnay -- VINTAGE
The growing season of 2005 saw a return to more typical Monterey vintage weather – foggy mornings, warm days with temperatures not exceeding 85 degrees, and windswept cool afternoons and evenings. This proved quite a relief to our harvest crew who had been through two consecutive hellish vintages in 2003 and 2004, which finished with heat waves requiring non-stop picking. Heavy winter rains . . .
2003 Estates Los Osos Merlot -- VINTAGE
The 2003 winegrowing season was an interesting year for making quality Merlot. A fairly cool spring followed by a warm period around fruit set resulted in a below average set. As a beneficial result, the 2003 vintage offered its own natural form of crop reduction, producing smaller quantities of fruit per vine. In turn, these lowered yields allowed each plant to fully express its varietal . . .

VINTAGE
The 2004 vintage was one of the earliest on record. Warm spring weather was followed by a moderate summer. It was not until early September that we received our first real heat spell. This heat event rapidly brought on sugar ripeness in many of our red varietals. Syrah harvesting was all but done by the time the heat began, with the first . . .
2005 Estates Bay Mist White Riesling -- VINTAGE
Monterey’s vintage of 2005 was very prolific, with abundant spring rains and a prolonged cool growing season. Ripening took place at a very even and moderate pace bereft of any heat spikes creating some of the tastiest white grapes in recent memory. Additionally, Botrytis (the Noble mold) was present on most of the Riesling fruit, adding an intense apricot complexity. The vintage of 2005 . . .

The 2004 vintage was one of the earliest on record. Warm spring weather preceded a moderate summer, followed by our first real heat spell in September. This particular heat event rapidly brought on sugar ripeness in many of the red varietals. Zinfandel was no exception with the sugars rising to 28° Brix, kicking off the 2004 harvest with a bang, which naturally resulted in another great . . .
