2002 Carol's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

VINTAGE

2002 is the second vintage of J. Lohr Carol’s Cabernet Sauvignon. The inaugural vintage of Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet showed its potential, now, the legacy of quality should be set with this new vintage 2002. Both the Cabernet and Petit Verdot ripened at approximately the same time so we decided to ferment the juices simultaneously. This not only allowed for the wines to become integrated at a young age, but also allowed the resulting wine to maintain an overall improvement in quality through interactions in the wines’ colors and tannins.

VINEYARDS

Carol’s Vineyard lies in northern St. Helena, comprised of 16.4 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon (Clone 337 on 3309 rootstock) and 4.3 acres of Petit Verdot (Clone 400 on 3309 rootstock). The well-drained, gravelly, sandy loam soil and “Bordeaux”-like climate of the Napa Valley is ideally suited to produce luxury-quality Cabernet fruit.

WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS

Rich, dark red with youthful purple hues. The 2002 ‘Carols’ was a treat to ferment, giving up some of the most luscious varietal aromas of currant and dark cherry. One of the most obvious traits to this wine is the beautiful dark purple colors that it gives up so easily during fermentation. The Petit Verdot adds dark tarry and licorice characters to the aroma and palate. The oak is chosen to highlight these primary fruit characters and complement the wine with vanilla and toasty secondary components. This wine is a treat to make and should be as equally pleasurable to drink in its youth and with 15-20 years of aging. This wine is ideally suited to red meats and pork, or tomato-based dishes.

Particularly in the Hilltop blocks, we are trying to provide dappled--not direct--sunlight on the fruit to protect the anthocyanin pigment from damaging high temperatures. 2004 Arroyo Vista Vineyard Chardonnay 2004 Arroyo Vista Vineyard Chardonnay -- VINTAGE Things got off to a fast start in 2004 with early budbreak, a very warm spring, and a very warm start to summer. We were running twenty to thirty days ahead of average vine development schedule in early July; this, compounded with fewer and smaller Chardonnay clusters, created anticipation for the earliest vintage on record. The weather continued to be warm, resulting . . .

2005 Carol's Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Carol's Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc -- VINTAGE The vintage of 2005 can be characterized by one word – ‘refreshing.’ Refreshing in that we had normal rainfall after two years of drought, and warm weather without heat storms at the end of the vintage, creating a frenzied dash to harvest – a year that put calm back into winemaking. This vintage marks the fifth year of production of J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, . . .
