2001 Cuvée POM VINTAGE

The 2001 harvest was very similar to the 2000. Experience from 2000 showed us that letting the fruit reach full phenolic ripeness was advantageous to quality. This basically means that we waited for the seeds to develop from a green color into dark brown, by which time the pulp has generally softened and the color becomes easily extracted. The J. Lohr Cuvée Series wines may come from any particular block within our vineyards that show the most typical varietal and regional characteristics. These qualities may vary from vineyard to vineyard each year, and even within clonal and rootstock combinations in a given vineyard. For the 2001 vintage, the perfect balance was found in block 9, clone 3 on SO4 rootstock.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS

The 2001 J. Lohr Cuvée POM is very dark, youthful purple-red in color. Ripe red cherry and blueberry fruit dominate the aroma with hints of chocolate, licorice and minty spice. The palate shows Merlot’s true colors with velvety tannins and a voluptuous, round mouthful of red cherry fruit. The wine is balanced with attractive vanilla spice, oak, and a long generous finish. This wine is drinking exceptionally well upon release but will age well for the next 10 to 15 years. Try it with roast pork stuffed with dried fruit and herbs or foods complemented by its richness.

Despite early bud break, some unseasonably warm weather during the growing season and several heat-spike weeks, "true" ripening happened very slowly. Most vintages have an order of ripening with tannins coming first, followed by pigments and then sugars in red varieties. In 2000, these typical ripening characteristics came in reverse order, with most . . .
